College functions are almost always indoors, in the evening, with a stage lit in whatever colours the AV team had available. It looks great from a seat. It photographs terribly, and no amount of editing fully recovers a magenta face.
Everyone photographs the stage. Very few photograph the rows in front of it, which is where the actual event is happening - friends reacting, someone laughing at a roast, someone crying at a farewell.
Those are the frames students save and share. So one camera stays on the stage and the other works the crowd for the whole evening. Neither is a spare.
